Program Suspension continues at Canadian Colleges

St. Lawrence College: The college has announced the suspension of 55 program intakes starting in the spring 2025 semester, impacting approximately 40% of their academic offerings.

Algonquin College: The college has proposed suspending 37 academic programs, set to take effect in Fall 2025, including four at their Pembroke campus. This reduction represents 16% of the college’s total programs.

New Rules to Strengthen Canada’s Temporary Resident Programs and Border Security

In a move to enhance border security and program integrity, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has updated regulations to strengthen the cancellation of temporary resident documents. Effective January 31, 2025, immigration and border officers now have explicit authority to cancel electronic travel authorizations (eTAs), temporary resident visas (TRVs), work permits, and study permits in specific situations, such as:

  • Inadmissibility or Ineligibility: If a person becomes inadmissible (e.g., due to false information, criminal history, or changes in status) or no longer meets eligibility requirements.

  • Non-Compliance: If an officer believes someone won’t leave Canada by the end of their authorized stay.

  • Document Issues: If a document is lost, stolen, destroyed, or abandoned.

  • Other Circumstances: If a person becomes a permanent resident, is deceased, or if the document was issued due to an administrative error.

These changes aim to improve the integrity of Canada’s temporary residence programs and strengthen border security. IRCC continues to invest in tools and processes to protect Canada’s immigration system.

Stay tuned for more updates on how these changes may impact temporary residents and applicants!

Deportations

No Mass Deportation in Canada, But Be Aware of Risks for Those Without Status

While there is no mass deportation happening in Canada, individuals without legal status or those working beyond the permitted hours as students could face deportation if found. It’s important to understand that this is not a joke—being in Canada without proper status or violating work restrictions can lead to serious consequences.

Second Round of Deportations: 119 Indian Migrants to Return from US

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump, a military aircraft carrying approximately 119 Indian illegal migrants is set to land at Amritsar International Airport between 10 pm and 11 pm. This follows the deportation of 104 Indians as part of the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration. The deportees come from various states, including Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, UP, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir.

Unlike the first deportation, where individuals were handcuffed and shackled, sources suggest that the second group will not be restrained in chains. The previous treatment had drawn widespread criticism, and India's External Affairs Minister had vowed to raise the issue with the US government. In a press conference after his meeting with Trump, Modi emphasized India’s commitment to repatriating verified nationals and highlighted the need to tackle human trafficking networks. Deportations are expected to continue every two weeks until all illegal immigrants are returned.

PNP Allocation 2025

"There is a 50% reduction in the PNP allocation across provinces. Provinces like British Columbia and Ontario haven't conducted any draws yet for 2025. If you can improve your score, the best way to target a CEC draw is to focus on it, as the federal government has made it clear that it intends to make this draw more frequent and prioritize Canadian Experience Class applicants for PR. Here is the complete breakdown of the 2025 PNP allocations.
