πŸ“’ Marc Miller Discusses Potential Reductions in Immigration Targets

Immigration Minister Marc Miller is considering reducing the number of permanent residents allowed in Canada each year. This potential reduction comes as he prepares to announce the annual immigration targets in November.

Key points:

  1. Miller cited declining job vacancies, rising unemployment (especially among newcomers and younger people), and growing affordability concerns as factors influencing this consideration.

  2. He plans to spend the next two weeks discussing various options with cabinet to ensure the immigration plan aligns with the economy and preserves the integrity of the immigration system.

  3. This marks a shift from previous years when targets were generally maintained or increased. For example, in 2022, Canada set targets of 465,000 permanent residents for 2023, 485,000 for 2024, and 500,000 for 2025.

  4. Miller took over the immigration portfolio from Sean Fraser in August 2023 and noted that several factors, including job scarcity and interest rates, have changed since last year.

  5. The new plan will introduce a target for temporary residents for the first time, in addition to permanent residents.

  6. Miller has already implemented caps on temporary residents, including restrictions on international students and temporary foreign workers, stating these adjustments were overdue due to an "overheated" temporary resident space.

  7. The minister emphasized that these changes are necessary to rebuild confidence in the immigration system.
